Can donor eggs come from a post partial-hysterectomy, mid- or post-menopause, 50-something woman?
I have found myself in a situation that I never expected to be in. My husband and I are considering our options to become parents. We are considering all options, but prefer to try for a biological child as a first option. It is my desire to carry my husband’s biological child; I want to see him in my baby. I also would like to see myself too; however, I carry chronic disease from my father’s side of the family. So, naturally my options for possible egg donors who then resemble me closely would include my biological female family members: sisters and mother. My sisters could also be carriers of this disease, although they do not suffer from it like I chronically do. My other resort, my mother, even as odd as that circumstance may initially strike most people. The latter being my preference though, because my mother is not a carrier and nor is her biological family, so there would be almost a zero chance on my future child suffering from the disease. Also in appearance, we are very very similar.
But, back to the question at hand… my mother has had a partial hysterectomy about 4 years ago, she is in her mid-50s, takes hormone replacement, and I guess that would also make her post-menopausal. Can she become a viable donor? Would her eggs, if she had any left, be in a good enough condition to be harvested?
( I know the biological ethics of this mother-to-daughter donation. I don’t have the desire to carry my own sister, and my future child to be her own aunt. My desire solely is to carry my husband’s biological child, to have it look like him, and then to have it resemble me as much as possible, without the precious child having to bear torturous illness passed from me. )
